Portsmouth Literary Events (Monday, September 14, 2015- Thursday, September 17, 2015)

In true Portsmouth Literary Borough fashion here's a sampling of just a few literary events going on in Portsmouth this week.  We may not be New York or Paris, however, #PortsmouthLOVE has a thriving literary scene.

Monday - SNHU’s Low-Residency MFA in Fiction and Nonfiction Presents:
Ann Beattie, Kate Christensen, Katherine Towler, and Yascha Mounck
Leaving New York, Coming to New England: A Panel and Reading.

LOCATION: BOOK AND BAR, 40 PLEASANT STREET, PORTSMOUTH

Four former New Yorkers who live in New England, all acclaimed writers, will discuss New England as a literary subject, leaving New York as a literary subject, and the literature of being a newcomer or stranger. The authors will read briefly from their work before the discussion begins, and afterward answer questions from the audience.
Monday, September 14th, 7:00 pm, Book & Bar, Portsmouth, NH
Free and open to the public, but pre-registration required.

Tuesday - Portsmouth Women Nonfiction Book Discussion

LOCATION: PORTSMOUTH PUBLIC LIBRARY, PARROT AVENUE, PORTSMOUTH

Book Description:

"In the history of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, countless women rose above a rigid society to make their marks on the seaport city. In the eighteenth century, Allice Shannon Hight became a successful tavern keeper, outliving two husbands and providing for ten children. Others flourished in more scandalous ventures, like Alta Roberts, otherwise known as the Black Mystery of Portsmouth--always donned in black, she operated a successful brothel at the Roberts House Saloon in the nineteenth century. Even greater achievements would come in later years from the likes of Mary Carey Dondero, who became one of the first women elected mayor in New England. This collection of essays, compiled by author and historian Laura Pope, celebrates the victories--large and small--of Portsmouth's notable women." - Arcadia Website
Tuesday— Baron Wormser: Unidentified Sighing Objects

LOCATION: RIVERRUN BOOKSTORE, FLEET STREET, PORTSMOUTH
"The focus of Baron Wormser s poetry over more than three decades has been the human drama of our trying to shape what is misshapen. In this, his tenth collection, he takes on a dizzying range of subjects from Diane Arbus to playground basketball to the fall of the Berlin Wall to Prospero to a suicide inquest. In all his poems, he pursues the complicated gist that will at once betray and reveal the welter of feeling that informs a moment, a scene, or a life. " - RiverRun Website
